45 Acres to 6000 Square Feet

Life is full of change.

For the last 8 years I haveplayed,
lived and created from a beautiful open
beam home at theend of the end of a dead
end road in the foot hills of theSanta
Cruz mountains.

It has been heavenly. I have actually
remarked to friends in conversation “I
live in paradise.” and I meant it.

Sure, there were the “too hot” days
and the occasional night that didn’t
cool. Or the momentary interruptions
of power outages, water heater melt
downs, and others of the sundry
affair our “local current vibe”
brings us from day to day.

But on the whole.

Overall.

Blue Hawk and Oboe Player have
been here 4 or 5 years at least…
Singing their own versions
of bird song among the crowd…

Golden eagle, hawk, deer… raccoon,
skunk, rabbit, coyote and bobcat have
all been our neighbors here.

I don’t have any trouble with
any of them. Nor they with me;
although the dogs occaisionally
have their run-ins…

I have lived in the edge of the
world, where the lives of so
many modern people are within reach,
but also, only within reach… Not
“in your face”.

Now I will be coming “back in to
the world”… I hope I’m ready.

The ocean is calling; and the home
is no longer a home for six but a
home for 3 or my abe 4, a nd all
in motion…

I think to myself as I stand and
look at the moon drenched hills…
that soon I will have a five minute
walk to the ocean; and that will
satisfy this ur ge. This vision …
this stillness and perfection of
life in motion.

It is an interesting feeling
saying goodbye to all of them. The
birds I feed. The gardens I have
grown and watered… of St. Johns
Wort, and Oregano, Lavender and
Mints (four varieties) Rosemaries
two varietiesand lavenders four
varieties… I have babies in
hanging pots and planters all
over the place who will travel
with me and we will begin a new
life… next to the sea…
in the morning fog…

Along the front path, the
back patio the driveway…
will come avocado, apricot
and grapefruit… lemon grass
and thyme… You have no
idea what a garden can become
in eight years… until it does.

Geranium, snapdragon, crepe
jasmine, nasturtium, nicotiana,
gladiola, dusty miller,
lemon trees, lemon balm, red and
purple yarrow… cosmos, marigold,
dianthus and vinca… |gardenia
and rose.

I have been wandering the
gardens wondering…

who stays…
who goes?
Sculptures, steps and stepping
stones pots, walls, planters…
The hills make these seem small
and yet
by the ocean.
on a cottage lot.
they overflow the landscape
with new possibility.
I’m packing up the keikis,
and the sculptures.

Ultimate Freedom

To decide and subsequently choose to feel what one wants to feel, regardless of circumstances or events; is the ultimate freedom possible in human experience.
